El Yunque & Outdoors
El Yunque, Hiking Trails & Bioluminescent Bays
El Yunque is the only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest System — 28,000 acres on the east side of Puerto Rico, an hour out of San Juan. Trails range from the paved La Coca Falls pull-off to the full Mount Britton summit. Just off the Fajardo coast, Mosquito Bay on Vieques and Laguna Grande in Fajardo run bioluminescent-bay kayak tours on moonless nights — the plankton glow is best in summer. Horseback rides in the foothills, waterfalls reachable by short hikes, and sea-kayaking at Cabezas de San Juan round out the outdoor pillar. Compliance reality: El Yunque and state forests are federally or territorially managed, and cannabis consumption on that land is prohibited even with a valid patient card. Post-trail at the car, at a licensed lounge, or back at the rental is the honest answer.
