Guánica
Bosque Estatal de Guánica’s dry forest, Gilligan’s Island day-trips, and a south-coast town slowly recovering from 2020 earthquakes.
Guánica sits on the south coast between Cabo Rojo west and Ponce east, anchored by the Bosque Estatal de Guánica — a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve dry tropical forest that's one of the most biodiverse and unusual ecosystems on the island. Gilligan's Island (Cayo Aurora) is the small offshore island day-trip, accessible by short boat ride from the harbor, with snorkeling and a calm-water swim layer. The town center took meaningful damage in the January 2020 earthquakes and the broader recovery is still underway, though the beach areas and the forest are fully accessible. JRCM-licensed retail in Guánica is thin, with Ponce 30 minutes east as the closest dense supply. For adults 21+, Guánica is a south-coast day or overnight built around the dry forest hike, a Gilligan's Island swim, and a quiet evening at one of the small beachfront rentals.
