Cannabis Etiquette: The Unwritten Rules of Social Consumption
A plain-English guide to cannabis etiquette social: what adults 21+ should know, how to think about it, and where to go for the next level of detail.

The Short Answer
Cannabis etiquette, the unwritten rules of social consumption, evolved through decades of prohibition-era ingenuity and has carried forward into the post-legalization era largely intact. For adults 21 and older sharing cannabis in private with friends, a few norms make sessions more enjoyable and less awkward. None of these are laws; they're just how people who've done this for a while tend to behave.
The Classic Rules
Puff, puff, pass. Two puffs, then pass. Don't hog the joint, pipe, or vape.
Pass to the left. Traditional direction; arguably apocryphal origin. Most circles still follow it.
Ash before passing. Tap off the ash before handing off.
Clear the hit before you speak. Inhale, hold briefly, exhale, then talk. Coughing through a hit ruins it.
Don't Bogart. From the Humphrey Bogart stereotype, don't keep the joint dangling from your mouth indefinitely.
Cornering. When lighting a bowl, burn only part of it rather than torching the whole surface, so others get fresh green.
If you pack it, light it. Host's privilege.
Don't cash the bowl for the whole group. If you take the last hit of a shared bowl, offer to pack the next.
For Bringing Your Own
If you arrive with your own supply:
- Offer to share if you're consuming around others. Standard.
- Match the vibe. If everyone's having a low-dose evening, don't pull out a 50 mg gummy and push doses.
- Name your dose if offering edibles to someone else. "This is 10 mg" matters.
- Bring enough for the group if the invitation was for a session specifically.
For Hosting
- Know your guests' tolerance. Don't serve a heavy edible to a first-timer.
- Offer low-dose options.
- Provide water and snacks. Dry mouth and munchies are real.
- Have a chill space available for anyone who over-does it.
- Don't push. Saying "no thanks" should end the offer.
For First-Timers in a Session
- Say you're new. Experienced consumers will adjust.
- Pace yourself. Just because everyone else is on round three doesn't mean you need to be.
- You can pass. Taking the joint and handing it on without hitting is fine.
- Don't mix cannabis with heavy drinking. Crossfade gets unpleasant.
What Not to Do
- Don't touch someone else's glass, grinder, or tools without asking.
- Don't use someone else's product without asking.
- Don't film or photograph people consuming without explicit consent. Employment and legal consequences still exist for many consumers.
- Don't drive anyone anywhere after a session. Arrange transport beforehand.
- Don't turn a chill evening into a dose-off. No one's impressed.
The Modern Twist
Dispensary-era cannabis has brought new formats (tinctures, edibles, drinks) that don't fit the classic passing rules. When sharing edibles:
- Name the dose.
- Respect that response varies.
- Don't redose for other people.
Compliance
- 21+ only. Every guest should be of legal age.
- Private setting. New York state law prohibits cannabis consumption on state-owned land and in public spaces.
- No consumption around children. Private adult-only context.
